Sorry mate, i'm not writting bullshit here

March 25th 2007 13:48
Quick post (good subjects deserve big ones, not this one).

Why do i think it is a loose of time reading/writting bullshit on the web?

First of all, everyday life has already plenty of bullshit around. TV, radio, at least half of your friends, your job...maybe even your girl, if you didn't look for a good one.

Second, bullshit has its interest in place and time. Like in bars, in soccer matches, playing soccer, cards, going out. I would hate to spend a night in a party discussing Kant, because i know i'd be drunk and the others too, so what's the point?

I think tough that is quite awkward that you read a blog drunk. "Hey mate, cut the music of, ask people to be quiet, we're reading a blog here! Give me another beer, this one has some weird stuff inside..."

We have already plenty of bullshit in everyday life, so please don't ask for more...

Anyway, this post in being published in a philosophy blog. If you're already here, i don't have to convince you anymore...maybe the best would be to forward it to some of my friends....ehhe

cheers. Uula

PS: quite an arrogant post, since it leaves the idea that what is written here is not bullshit....anyway....

I quite enjoy reading bullshit myself; and I certainly write a lot of it.

What do you think of this? -- An artist tells the truth by telling lies; a politician tells lies by telling the truth.

hehe, ok mate, i'll give bullshit a break.

Concerning the sentence, what's "truth" anyway? For each fact we'll never have more than our interpretations for it, and thus "truth" is quite vague...

From Beyond Good and Evil:

The will to truth, which is still going to tempt us to many a daring exploit, that celebrated truthfulness of which all philosophers up to now have spoken with respect, what questions this will to truth has already set down before us! What strange, serious, dubious questions! There is already a long history about them—and yet it seems that this history has scarcely begun. Is it any wonder that we finally become mistrustful, lose patience and, in our impatience, turn ourselves around, and learn from this sphinx to ask questions for ourselves? Who is really asking us questions here? What is it in us that really wants "the truth"?

Cheers! Uula

What's truth anyway? And what do I think of Nietzsche's flippant disrespect for the truth? -- I'm not going to go there, Uula. Too much ink would need to be spilt.

By the way, have you noticed that bullshit has recently become a respectable topic in American philosophy? Ever since what's-his-name wrote a small book called "On bullshit". As I understand it, the difference between bullshit and lie is that while lies are concealments of truth, bullshit is the making of statements without any regard truth or falsity, and is therefore more unethical.

If you take the Nietzsche's way of seeing truth and the definition you gave about bullshit, we're saying either lies or bullshit all the time....hehe

Since nothing in the world is digital, maybe we should rate things in "degrees of lie". Newton's laws are lies, but less than Bush's excuses to his war on Iraq...

Uula.

PS: Thanks for the comment, nice one
