One of the hardest points to understand in phylosophy allways seemed to me a problem of quality of explanation (once i understood the solution for it, of course). It is the solution for the antinomy between Realism and Idealism created following Kant's philosophy.

Let me explain from the beginning: when Kan't proposed that the interpretation we have from the hold is not exactly what it is - the representation problem, the difference between Noumena (what things are) and Phenomena (what things are for us) - he created a problem: how can we prove that the world in front of you is real?

Actually this problem is quite older, it dates from the Greeks, you can see it on the Allegory of the cave. This problem was solved by Cartesians by saying that it was God that guaranteed that Noumena = Phenomena. Kant wanted to surpass this, so he considered this hypothesis invalid.

After this point he developed his hole "Shematics" phylosophy which made the link between Empirists and Cartesianists. This theory is what generates the concepts, intuitions and ideas, which we used to propose a more mathematical approach using the infinite transforms and link it to Nietzsche's philosophy. But this is not the point for today's post.

The root problem of prooving that the world was real (or not) could not be solved by Kant. Thus after him we had a hole generation of people that developed the Idealism, and could not solve it either.

It was only in the beginning of the XXth century that Husserl started to find the solution for this issue (which is not a real solution, but it seems to me more the acceptance of our incapability): the transcendental ego proposed was that the being should not be studied separated from the reality it lives, because no analysis is possible in this way.

This means: it is pointless to study the being apart from the reality, and thus it is pointless to ask the question if the outside world is real or not.

Following this path, Heidegger came with Dasein: his "being there". There is no meaning to study the being without the reality where he is imerged. And more than just the simple reality around you, the most important step of Heidegger is that it's the hole history which has to be taken into account for the study of beings (mostly for men).

Then we have Sartre, who came with a pretty sentence to add to Heidegger's philosophy: existence precedes essence. This means that we exist, then we define a reason for being, in function of the history (the reality) around us.

From Heidegger and Sartre we have found that men are born opened: we can be, in function of our inborn capacities, anything that history allows us to be.

All of this to conclude that: when you read those "be yourself" logos from any clothing shop or fast food chain, send them to hell: 20 centuries of philosophy are there to proove us that we can be anything, and even change it tomorrow.

Following item 3 of the first chapter of the book:

"The capacity of creating abstract notions (...) is what we have allways called reason."

For Schopenhauer reason is the capacity of imagine facts in our minds. The way I see (in a more mathmatical way..) is more like this. Reason is the capacity of operating the vectors interpreted. These operations can include any combintation, product, and so on.

When we calculate the product between to facts, everything we'ree doing is calculate how analoge they are. If they are completely ortogonal (one times the other equals zero) it means that these facts, when using this base, are ortogonal. Please remark that changing the base changes the result, example:

Imagine a piramid with a square base. If you compare the pyramid looking from the top to a triangle and to a square, the bigger product will be the one with the triangle (they are more similar). On the other hand, if you loog to the pyramid from the bottom and compare it again with the triangle and the square, the bigger product will be with the square.

The creation of abstract facts is a subset of the capacity of dealing with them (it means do any kind of operation).

Another thing that is forgoten in this is memory: without it we would have any set of facts to be able to deal with. It means that memory and reasoning are both important. You can overcome problems of reason by having a good memory and vice versa, but if you don't have one of the 2, you're dead..

Still, one last thing forgotten: senses. If we didn't have senses we wouldn't be able to get any facts from real.

So we got the conclusion that there are 3 things a priori in men: reason, memory and senses:

- senses are the capacity of interpreting facts from real.
- memory is the capacity of storage of facts interpreted.
- reason is the capacity of doing operations with facts.

hope i'm clear enough...

cheers.

From the first page of the book we see (free translation, from French):

"everything that exists, exists for the mind, it means, the hole universe is an object for a subject, (..) it is pure representation

Following some holidays and "The World as will and representation" from Schopenhauer (read in French, I don't know German..), here we go for a little series of posts.

This one is on time, space and matter (as all philosophers like to start their books

Welcome to 1984

August 27th 2008 07:22
6 months ago the US/EU were defending Kosovos independence, while russians were claiming it was against i dont know which international law. Now its the exact oposite for Ossetia.
Do you still think their real reasons are based on "international rights"?
They must think were all stupid. For my side i think theyre clowns

More on causality

July 22nd 2008 11:18
Well, i didn't have much time to read philosophy these last months, so i had no new subject to talk about in the blog... since i don't like posting bullshit just to fill up some pages, there were no new posts these last months. Well, after some days off at work, i have time to think about some new ideas.

These post comes from the 4th "cartesian meditation" from the book from Husserl, "Meditations cartesiennes

Some overvaluation of language

Following the last post a friend of mine asked for a little explanation on the Heidegger's concept of Dasein, which is mostly the same as Husserl's "transcendental ego".

Normally people tend to think it's a tuff thing to explain, but i bet this example will help us out. Remember Newton and the story of the apple falling in his head? I bet you can't understand now why am i coming with this one, but think again

Kick a stone

March 23rd 2008 18:43
There is a philosophical problem that have never been completely solved since Descartes, which many good men couldn't get to no final answer neither.

Its the impossibility for us to proove that the world around us really exists. To be clear and go straigh to the matter (i'm not here to tell stories), the last idea that came around to solve the matter was Husserl's "transcendental ego" and Heidegger's "Dasein", which are almost the same. They avoided studying men alone, instead they studied the men inmerged in "real", so that this problem no longer exists

Transcending...

February 19th 2008 13:55
A friend of mine was asking me these days what the hell means "transcend", used in most all philosophy books you find.

Well, the simple translation to commom language would be "to get out of yourself". The first example that comes to my mind is the dice one. Pick up a dice, look at it so that you know where are the numbers on it. Then, place it in front of you. Of course, there are some faces you can't see. But you can guess which numbers are written on each face, since you've looked at it before. This ability to guess the numbers in the faces you can't see is one simple case of transcendence. You're figuring out thing in reality that do not present themselves to your senses

"Eigen-facts" and balance

October 12th 2007 17:06
Maths mate, if you don't understand it, leave it.

Analysing "facts" as infinte dimension vectors and "real" as an infinte dimension space has already been discused in this blog. Also, seeing "interpretation" as a linear transform being applied to the "facts" in "real" is 6 months old by now. You can take a look at it here

Ontology as the limit of epistemology

August 28th 2007 21:10
What is the 'thing-in-itself"? What are all those things around you right now? How can you get to the point where you see it not only throught your phenomenal eyes, bound to have a small picture of the thing?

Fisrt of all, all the data we can get from an object comes from our representation. Every time we look at something we can find something new about it, that can be added to what we think is this object. Obviously after a couple of times looking at someone you can tell that you are not getting much new information about it, and your knowledge about him tend to be limited to a certain point

The echoes of randomness

August 27th 2007 20:51
Some people tend to think that the world can be defined by models. Others, on the other hand, are there to proove all the time that the only model that works is randomness, and thus no model created will work all the time.

For the best, it will work until someone prooves it is wrong, following Popper

Reason as an a priori for men

August 14th 2007 16:26
These days i tought that one thing have be considered as an a priori that every man have. Following Shopenhauer, that would be reason.

It's true that every men is born with this capacity. Having this capacity is the only thing that garantees that we can learn and take conclusions on things. We are obviously so apart from animals here

Ladies and gentles, that's not my idea. That's not even new.

This comes from Kant, and to better understand it, you should read on Critic of Pure Reason. A second but great presentation on the subject is on Kant - An introduction to the 3 critics, by Luc Ferry. The third option would be to read this post

Ontology, terminology, essence..

Hi all,

Since in this post we'll be talking about beings, it's time to get a little deeper into ontology. To start it i'll need to add some definitions in my terminology. I should have done this before, but it's quite boring, and it needs the knowledge presented in the last posts. So

hehe, still on physics (there is plenty of things to talk about before we go to ethics). As i said in last post, in this one i'll be focusing on the phenoumena-phenoumena relation, and in the end a little reflection on causality, since is a subject that we have to go through
