Essays on societies - 1 - Presenting the affair..

May 30th 2007 13:45
Hey all,

this is a little analisys of our society systems (political-economical-social systems) being applied nowadays in the world. In the point of view of these posts they can all be placed in the middle of 2 base systems of society, one based on merit, the other based on equality.

This 2 systems have good basis, they are all humanist in theis roots. But they simply value 2 different things, and this makes them a hole world appart from each other.

Taking a look at both.

Systems based on merit show the important thing that men should be valued by their work. "You can't judge in the same level someone that passes all his time doing nothing neither for him nor for society, and someone who works his ass off every day." That's preety fair, someone that works more should have more voice to speak among others. We do this every day, in work, with friends, etc.

On the other hand, systems based on equality think that all men are equal, and they should be treated like this. In this case, noone should be left behind because he can't reach to some level society needs him to be. "We should treat everyone in the same way, since we have all the same rights". That's preety fair too, since i'm as human as everyone around.

See, both systems have humanist bases: men should be valued by their work, men are all equal. They both (in theory) leave behind the concept that there are people who are born better than others, and we're just a reflex of what the world has given us the right to be, which is somehow the greek (and Niezsche's) philosophy.

Every society in the world is divided and defends one of this sides, more or less. There is still nothing better than this, and since there is only these 2, they've been biased aginst each other, and presented as 2 oposite things. In the base, they are not.

They become oposite when we talk about how do we gift merit or equality. They both gift people in the same way, with capital. And here we get stuck in the middle of them, because in this point they become rivals.

And so we've presented the think, next post we'll start taking a look more deeply at each other to see if we can get to some better conclusions than these so old systems...

Cheers. Uula

I believe that you are correct in your analysis.

I have also seen this operate at the level of management styles in motivation.
Rewarding the team or rewarding the individual.

Martha Nussbaum is really useful on this with her capabilities approach. She suggests that while individuals are not literally equal, it is the responsibility of the society to supply them with agreed basics like education, health care etc so that they can flourish according to their capabilities.

Hey all, thanks for the comments.

Concerning Damo's, i agree with you mate, there are plenty of cases where you can see this distinction between rewarding the group or the individual. So you have to check for each case which is the one that would work best...

Concerning Fashion's, thanks for the reference! We'll be getting to this point in one of the next posts..

cheers.
